Today's FHE Lesson is QUICK but POWERFUL!
You Will Need:
An Umbrella
and
A Set of Scriptures
Object:
To show that the scriptures have the power
to keep us safe and protect us if we read and apply
them to our lives.
Lesson:

 Show your family the umbrella without opening it.
Ask them if the umbrella will keep them dry in a
storm if they just carry it with them.

Open the umbrella and hold it over your head.
Ask the same question.
This time the umbrella will help to keep us dry
and offer protection from the weather.
What was the difference?
Show your family the scriptures in their case.

Ask them if the scriptures can help us
if we just carry them around in the case.
Open the case and remove the scriptures.

Open the scriptures and have a family member read
2 Nephi 32:3.
Ask family members how the scriptures can
help to keep us safe from the storms of life.
Remind family members that . . .
The scriptures are like the umbrella.
They can only work if we open them.
The Scriptures ARE the Word of God.
We can enjoy the safety and protection that the
scriptures offer, if we open them, study them, and
feast upon the words of Christ.
Challenge:
SET A GOAL AS A FAMILY
TO COMPLETE THE BOOK OF MORMON
BY THE END OF THE YEAR!
Time for Treats:

Serve family members a candy bar in the wrapper.
Tell them that the candy bar is theirs to enjoy,
BUT tell them that they can't remove the wrapper.
Remind them that in order to
"FEAST UPON THE WORD"
we have to open the gift.
The scriptures have always been our gift to enjoy.
Unfortunately, we sometimes forget to unwrap this
precious gift and feast upon the words.
End with your testimony of the importance of the
scriptures in your own life.
Post your family goal to complete the Book of Mormon
in a place that will serve to remind the family often.

Primary Theme and Scripture FHE: Service!

November's Theme is:

When We Serve Others . . . We Serve God.

Here's the Scripture:

This scripture is found in Mosiah 2:17

Opening Prayer:

Christmas is just around the corner and a time when service

opportunities are abundant.

Come up with some ideas for SERVICE

you can do as a family during the upcoming holiday season.

My family decided that we would not be exchanging

family gifts this year for Christmas.

Instead, the money we would have spent on each other

will go into a fund which will be used to help

a family in need for Christmas.

We wanted to give everyone in the family to participate

so here's how we set it up:

The mom's and dad's will do the shopping.

The younger children will help with the wrapping,

and the teens will be in charge of the SECRET DELIVERY.

I know first hand what it feels like to have a secret delivery

on Christmas Eve.

My husband and I were married shortly before Christmas.

I was the the third daughter in 10 months.

(Bless my parent's hearts!)

Needless to say, there was no money left for Christmas.

Someone very kind left packages on the doorstep of

my parents home so that my younger siblings could have Christmas.

We have never been able to find out who did it,

but we were FOREVER TOUCHED by their kindness.

By teaching our children what it feels like to GIVE,

WE ARE SERVING!

Here are a few ideas you might like to try:

Money Gloves

Our Bishop and his family gave gloves to the homeless with

rolled up dollar bills in the fingers of the glove.

Increase Your Fast Offerings

Set a goal as a family to double or triple your fast offerings

next month.  I imagine the Lord will be able to do more good

with our money than we can.

Fill Christmas Jars

Fill jars with as much money as you can and drop it off

at the doorstep of a family in need.

SECRETLY . . . OF COURSE!

Put Together Hygiene Kits

There is a great need for these items.

Check with the Welfare Systems of the church to see what you can do.

Another Neighbor Holds a Coat Drive

The coats are donated to a local shelter and are

greatly appreciated by those who receive them.

Donate Food or Turkey's

Deliver Dinner Baskets to families in need.

Put all of the ingredients for a Thanksgiving or Christmas Dinner

and deliver it a day or two before the holiday.

Bear your testimony and challenge your family

to do a little bit more than what they think they can

to give service.

How great is it that when we serve others . . . we really

are serving our Heavenly Father!

Here's the Treat:

Old Fashioned Pumpkin Pie

Recipe:

Ingredients:

2 Cups Pumpkin (canned or puree)

2 Tbsp. Butter, melted

2 Eggs

2/3 Cup Brown Sugar

1 1/4 Cups Half & Half (or Whole Milk)

Pinch Salt

1 tsp. Cinnamon

1/4 tsp. Ground Cloves

1/4 tsp. Ground Ginger

1/2 tsp. Ground Nutmeg

9" pie crust

Instructions:

Place the pumpkin in a bowl,

and add 2 Tbsp. of melted butter stirring well.

 In a separate bowl, beat the eggs well.

Then, beat in brown sugar, milk, salt, and spices

until thoroughly blended.

 Add in the pumpkin mixture, and mix well.

Pour into the pie crust and make sure

to use the center rack in the oven at 425 degrees F for 10 minutes.

Then reduce the heat to 350 degrees

and bake an additional 30 to 40 minutes until the filling is firm.

Cool before serving. Best with whipped cream

Whipped Cream Ingredients:

1 cup heavy cream

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup sugar

Recipe:

Use an electric mixer to whip the cream

until almost stiff.

Add in the vanilla and sugar beating it until the cream holds peaks.

Thought:

I have always felt the best way to show love to others

is to share the gospel with them.

Purpose:

Help family members appreciate missionaries and prepare to serve.

Lesson:

Place a world map or globe in the center of the room.

Obtain eight to ten temple pictures (or put their names on a

strip of paper) from around the world and place

them around the map.

Tell you family that Heavenly Father has commanded

all the prophets to send missionaries to many countries.

Ask your family members the following questions:

How does Heavenly Father show love for His children?

Why does Heavenly Father want missionaries in every nation?

What do missionaries teach?

Why is it important that everyone prepare to be a missionary?

Tell your family that because Heavenly Father loves the

people of every country, he has sent missionaries out to preach

the gospel.  Those who accept the gospel can become

ready for the blessings of the temple.

Many years ago there were just a few temples on the earth.

Now there are many temples in the world that can provide those

blessings to the followers of Jesus.

Have your family match the temple to the correct country.

As temple and country are matched, connect them with string.

Tell your family that Heavenly Father loves the

missionaries because they are his servants.

He wants them to teach the gospel because he loves all of

his children and wants them to have all the blessings of the gospel.

Story:

6,000 Miles to Bring a Message

One day [Elder Hugh B. Brown] was going door to door in

Norwich, England.

He knocked on a door and received no answer.  Through an open

window he saw a woman sitting in her living room,

knitting.  He knocked again, but she still didn't answer.  What he

didn't know was that she had spotted him, recognized that he was

a Mormon missionary, and decided not to go to the door.

But Elder Brown was not so easily ignored.  He wanted her to

hear what he had to say.  So he walked around her house and knocked

hard, with his walking stick, on the back door.

Needless to say, the woman flew to her door and gave the missionary

quite a talking to.  Elder Brown later wrote:

When she did stop, I said, "My dear lady, I apologize

for having annoyed you, but our Heavenly Father sent me 6,000 miles

to bring you a message, and inasmuch as he sent me I can't

go home until I give you that message."

After telling her the story of Joseph Smith and the restoration

of the gospel to the earth, he apologized again for disturbing

her.  The he added, "Sister, when you and I meet again,

and we will meet again, you are going to say, 'Thank you, and thank

God that you came to my back door and insisted on speaking

to me.'"

Ten years later, Hugh Brown was in England again, this time

as a soldier in World War I.  A conference was scheduled

in Norwich, but the mission president was sick and couldn't attend.

He called Major Brown to see if he could go fill in.

He did so willingly.  At the end of the meeting, a

woman came up to see him.  Tears rolled down her cheeks

as she kissed his hand.  She said:

I do thank God that you came to my door ten years ago.  When you left that day,

I thought about what you had said.  I couldn't get it out of my mind. 

I was fighting it, but I couldn't sleep that night.

I kept thinking, 'God has sent a message to me.' . . . I tried to

find the missionaries from the address on the tract you left,

and when I found them, you had returned to Canada.

We continued to investigate until my daughter and I

joined the church.

Elder Brown was deeply touched, and he remembered all

the doors he had knocked on during his mission - and all of

the rejections.  He wondered whether other people he had

taught had later accepted the gospel.

Activity:

Pray together as a family for missionary opportunities.

We don't have to be set apart as a missionary

to invite others to come unto Christ.

Extras:

Make a Missionary Savings Bank

Write to Missionaries Serving form your Family or Ward.

Invite the Missionaries to Dinner.

Object Lesson:

Draw a large square on a piece of paper.

Tell your family that it represents the four sides of a fence.

Explain that many people might consider this fence restrictive

and try to jump or climb over it.

Others would consider the fence as a way to keep anything

from hurting them.

Heavenly Father has given us a protective fence called the commandments.

Invite family members to name some of the commandments.

Write them around the outside of the square.

Ask how each of these commandments protects us.

Make a copy for each of the members of your family and

have them draw a picture of themselves or the whole family

inside the square.

Story:

How to Be Exactly Obedient

Even Jesus, the greatest person ever to live on this earth,

won the prize of eternal glory only by strict obedience

to the will of his Father.

Noah was another superb example.

Long before the rains came, while it was still dry, the Lord

commanded him to build a ship to save his family from a great flood.

That would be like the Lord commanding his servant, Brother Ogden,

to take his family from Provo, Utah, and flee up the canyon eastward

into Heber Valley, and there build a spaceship.

The world would soon be destroyed, and that would be the only

way for my family to escape and be saved.

My reaction, of course, would be

"But Lord, I don't know how to build a spaceship."

I suspect Noah must have felt the same way.  But he responded.

He did exactly as the Lord instructed him

(the Lord providing the details after Noah demonstrated his willingness to obey),

and, in the end, the prophet and his family were saved and

thus perpetuated the human race.

We all appreciate Noah's obedience:

We are descendants of Noah, and his obedience preserved our

option to come here for this crucial mortal probation.

Activity:

On one side of a paper, list the following actions:

Stay Up Too Late

Exercise

Arrive Late For School or Work

Break a Traffic Law

Smile

Eat Too Much

Drive on a Flat Tire

Prepare Well for an Assignment or Test

If you desire, list any others that are applicable for your family.

Draw a line down the middle of the paper.

Briefly discuss what the word consequences means.

Tell your family that every choice has a consequence.

Sometimes the consequences do not happen for a long time,

but there is always a consequence.

Go through the list and have family members tell what the

consequence of each action might be.

On the other side of the line,

write one or two consequences of each action.

Determine whether the action shows obedience or disobedience.

Extras:

Play "Simon Says."

Liken keeping the commandments with following

"Simon's" instructions exactly.

Teach the following verse:

If I can learn while I am young

To listen and obey,

When I am older, doing right

Will be the easier way!

Easy Sticky Buns

Ingredients:

18 Frozen Dinner Rolls

3-1/2 oz. Package Cook & Serve Butterscotch Pudding Mix

1/2 cup Butter, Melted

1/2 cup Brown Sugar, Packed

1 tsp. Cinnamon

Pecans and Raisins are optional!

Instructions:

Arrange frozen rolls in a greased Bundt pan;

sprinkle with pudding mix and set aside.

Combine butter, brown sugar and cinnamon;

pour over rolls.

Cover tightly with greased aluminum foil and let rise

all day or overnight.

Uncover and bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.

Carefully invert onto a serving platter.

Serve warm.

Makes 1-1/2 Dozen!

If You're In A HURRY . . .

Use a muffin tin!

Pour the mixture (above) into each tin.

Place one dinner roll into each of the tins.

Let rise until doubled in size.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes.

Carefully invert pan onto a baking dish.

Serve Warm.

Isn't it wonderful that miracles are not just something

that happened in the past?!?

We can witness miracles EVERYDAY when we

open our eyes

wide enough to see them!

Opening Prayer:

"For behold, I am God; and I am a God of miracles;

and I will show unto the world that I am the same

yesterday, today, and forever; and I work not

among the children of men save it be according to

their faith."

2 Nephi 27:23

Lesson:

Share with your family some of the miracles

found in the scriptures.

Jesus healed the leper.

He gave sight to the blind.

He raised the dead.

He healed the sick.

He performed many miracles then . . . but what about now?

Are there no more miracles?

Remember the scripture:

" . . . He is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

Miracles are happening all around us.

A miracle requires faith.

Even though Jesus stood in front of those he performed

miracles for, they still had to have FAITH!

Faith is part of the miracle.

Joseph Smith had faith that his prayer would be answered,

and it was.

He saw God the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ.

Through this miracle, we have the Book of Mormon.

What are some of the miracles you have witnessed in your life?

President Eyring gave a talk and reminded us

to look for the Lord's hand in our DAILY lives.

He kept a journal of the little miracles and blessings

he experienced in his life everyday.

As a Family Challenge this Month

we would like to encourage the members of your family

to keep a journal like President Eyrings.

Take the opportunity during family dinner or before

evening prayers to recognized the Lord's hand in your day, and

to record it in your journal.

Can you imagine what a treasure this will be

for generations to come?!?

As we recognize His hand,

our testimonies of modern miracles

will surely be strengthened!

Activity:

I put together some journal cards that can be put into a

clear plastic photo album.

(The $1.00 ones from Walmart or Smith's.)

Ask the Following Questions:

Why did Suzanne need to follow Paul carefully?

Who are the people we should follow?

What got in Suzanne's way when she tried to get back on the path?

What are some things that keep us from following the Savior?

What can we do to avoid the rocks and stay on the path?

Activity:

Take a walk around the yard or through a park.

Place a picture of the Savior at the end of your hike.

Have your children follow in each of your steps.

If they step off the path, they will receive a rock. 

They will have to carry this rock and any others they may collect for the rest of the hike.

The rocks can become heavy or difficult to carry.

Remind your children that when we choose not to follow

the Savior, we are choosing a difficult path.

When you arrive at your destination you will come to the picture of the Savior.

This is a great opportunity to bear your testimony.

Take the the opportunity to teach them the importance of following the

example of Jesus Christ.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups Graham Cracker Crumbs

1/4 cup Sugar

3/4 cup Melted Butter 

1 8-ounce can Crushed Pineapple

1 3-ounce Box Lemon Flavored Gelatin

1 3-ounce Box Lime Flavored Gelatin

1 1/2 cups Boiling Water

1 1/2 cups Cold Water

1 cup Daisy Brand Sour Cream

Directions:

Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and melted butter until moist.

Press into the bottom of a 9x13 inch pan sprayed with non-stick spray.

Set aside.

Drain pineapple and reserve juice.

 Dissolve gelatin in boiling water.

Add cold water and reserved pineapple juice.

Chill until partially thickened.

Fold in pineapple and sour cream.

Pour onto graham cracker crust and chill until firm.
