Ark Prep 101 - Infant Care!

It's all about BABIES TODAY!
I think that in an EMERGENCY, taking care of our children
should be High On Our List.
Can you imagine NOT having any Formula, Bottles, or Diapers?
(I seriously have a soft spot for babies . . . soooo cute!)
Here's a List of the Basics
You Should Have On Hand:
Formula
Diapers
Wet Wipes
Diaper Rash Ointment
Bottles
Binky's
Blankets
and
A Few Extra Outfits
You Might Also Think of Including:
Medicine for Fever Relief
Pedialite
Ear Drops
A Bulb Syringe
and
A Few Toys
Keep these items in an extra diaper bag or duffel bag.
So . . . What do you do if you CAN'T get Formula?
So Stinkin' Cute . . . I can't stand it!
Here's a Recipe for
Emergency Baby Formula:
Ingredients:
1/3 cup plus 2 Tbsp. Instant Powdered Milk
OR
1/4 cup Non Instant Powdered Milk
1 1/2 cup Boiled Water
1 Tbsp. Oil
2 tsp. Sugar
Instructions:
Mix Powdered milk and water together.
Blend thoroughly.
Add oil and sugar.
If baby bottles are not available,
milk can be spoon fed to an infant.
Here's a Recipe for Soy Milk Formula:
Soy milk is a good substitute for any one that is allergic
to cow's milk.
Soak 2 cups Soybeans for 12 hours.
Change the water frequently.
Grind soaked, raw beans with a fine blade in a food grinder.
Add 6 cups water to the beans in a large pan.
Cook until foamy for 1 hour.
Put through a blender, then strain through a cheesecloth.
Refrigerate.
Emergency Baby Food:
Ingredients:
3/4 cup Cereal Grain
1/4 cup Beans
Instructions:
Boil until soft, then press through a sieve.
Boil again to insure that it is bacteria free.
This will provide good protien and iron, as well as calories.
This can be fed to infants under 6 months if adequate milk is not
available, but it must be pureed to a fine texture.

Teething Sticks:
Ingredients:
2/3 cup Milk
1 Tbsp. Brown Sugar
1 cup Whole-Wheat Flour (approximately)
4 Tbsp. Butter, Melted and Cooled
1 cup Untoasted Wheat Germ
Instructions:
Beat together the milk, butter, and sugar.
Stir in the wheat germ and enough flour to make a dough.
Knead until smooth and satiny, about 8-10 minutes.
Pinch off balls of dough and roll them into sticks
about 1/2-inch thick and 4-inches long.
Bake on a greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees
for 45 minutes or until browned and hard.
Cool the sticks before giving them to your baby to teethe on.
ALWAYS supervise any child with a teething stick.

(Yep . . . that's a Muggins!)
Diaper Rash Reliever:
Ingredients:
2 Tbsp. Powdered Chamomile Flowers
1/4 cup Cornstarch
Instructions:
Add cornstarch and FINELY powdered chamomile
to a container with a shaker top.
Cover, and shake it into a mix.
At every diaper changing, shake the mixture on baby's bottom
until evenly dusted with a thin coating.
*HINT*
If rash persists, dab garlic oil onto rash areas.
It might be stinky . . . but I hear it works!
Make sure you take some time this week
to put a few things aside for YOUR BABY just in case!
Grandma's . . . It wouldn't hurt to have a few
extra baby items on hand for when the tinies come to visit.
You're one more VERY IMPORTANT STEP closer
to being PREPARED NOT SCARED!

Thanks for the reminder! I think sometimes the baby items are forgotten when it comes to being prepared! You do such a great job with this blog!

Even better option than homemade formula--breastfeed, then you never have to worry about running out.

Somebody mentioned your blog at our RS preparedness meeting in Delaware last night, and I've been getting sooo many great ideas - thank you for sharing all of these helps!!

Wow, this is so useful! Thank you! My friend has it on Pinterest...awesome job!
A quick note about the diaper rash recipe--if your baby has a yeast rash, corn starch will feed it and make it spread and grow within hours.

breast milk also works for diaper rash

I wanted to share the link to your blog on my facebook group but it says it is dangerous or spam..silly facebook. Thank you for the great blog post.

Actually you don't need much. Breastfeed. Babies can actually go without diapers or you can use any clothing around. I do like your ideas though the formula here should strictly be for EMERGENCIES only. That won't have enough nutrients for long term. Should someone want homemade formula Google "Weston A. price homemade baby formula".

On your list of things to have for a baby, you listed "Binky's", but you did not say what of Binky's you should have...

great to know, except that soy is toxic, and really bad for infants, and also keeps them from asorbing vital nutrients.. soy is also a billion dollar industry... you can google it to find more info.

Thank you so much for the reminders! I also agree that the formula recipe should be used strictly in an emergency. And in response to another commenter, while it's true that breastfeeding is great for the "endless" supply, as a breastfeeding mom myself, I have made sure to keep a container of formula in our emergency kit. There is no guarantee that in an emergency I will be able to breastfeed my infant, so in case something were to happen to me (or my milk supply) during an emergency we choose to keep formula in our kit. I'd highly suggest other breast feeding mommas to do the same!

Thank you for sharing the baby formula recipe. I am printing it out to keep in my emergency preparedness binder. I would be curious to know where you got the recipe, if you get a few minutes to let me know.

To the anonymouses out there that stated "Breastfeeding" was the only and better answer...this is great advice and before you judge maybe think about the fact that some women tried to and were unable to breastfeed or had medical conditions preventing it and had to use formula. I would have much rather breastfed and was unable to. Thank you to the author for great info! Its easy to forget the baby stuff when its not always on the emergency prep lists.

a good way to make homemade diaper rash ointment is to take purelard, monistat and some baby magic mixed together. I have seen it work GREAT. It also gives fast relief.

But... in an emergency do you have all those ingredients to make 'emergency formula'? It's way easier to just have formula. Also.. I'm a breastfeeding mom.. and my infant had to be fed formula for a few days while I suffered a medical emergency a few days after his birth. Thank goodness I held on to those sample cans!

Some of us aren't lucky enough to be able to nurse our babies no matter what we try or how badly we wanted to. Thanks for this, this is a worry I've had. Luckily my little one is six months now and getting food too

Not everyone can breast feed.

Also, what if mom is separated from baby in the emergency? It's just good to know this stuff, even though we hope it's never needed.

Stress affects beatnik production. In an emergency situation, with a newborn, you are bound to be very stressed. While breatfeeding is amazing, you cannot control your body. This about emergency PREPAREDNESS. Best to be ready with a contingency plan. Plus, when you are in an emergency situation, you may have a lack of nutrition ingested into your own body, which also affects milk supply. Better o be safe then sorry, and have this printed or for information, just in case!

When you put together your emergency kit, include Coconut oil. It's good for diaper rash, thrush, dry skin, cuts, toothpaste, and so much more. Google the many uses of Coconut oil.
