Family Home Evening - Christ Centered Families!

What are YOU doing as a Family
to create
A Christ Centered Home?
Yesterday during Stake Conference we heard
some really amazing talks that I hope to review during
the next few week's.
(Brother and Sister Shuppe both did a great job!)
Opening Prayer:
Song:
Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth
Children's Songbook
Scripture:
The speakers based their talks on the scripture found in
D&C 88: 119
Organize Yourselves;
Prepare Every Needful Thing;
and Establish a House,
even a house of PRAYER,
a house of FASTING,
a house of FAITH,
a house of LEARNING,
a house of GLORY,
 a house of ORDER,
A HOUSE OF GOD.
I have always loved this scripture, especially because
of my love of organizing, but also because it covers
EVERYTHING THAT HAS ETERNAL VALUE!
...PRAYER...
Prayer is the act by which the will of the Father and
the will of the child are brought into correspondence with each other.
The object of prayer is not to change the will of God,
but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that
God is already willing to grant, but that are made conditional
upon our asking for them.
Blessings require some work or effort on or part
before we can obtain them.
Prayer is a form of work, and is an appointed means
for obtaining the highest of all blessings.
...FAMILY PRAYER...
One of the best things we can do as a family
is PRAY TOGETHER.
Pray for each other.
When a child hears another a brother or sister pray
for something important to them great bonds are formed.
We all have CrAzY schedules
and getting together for prayers may seem like an impossible goal.
We have one in Elementary School, Jr. High, High School, and
one that will be leaving on a mission.
We found that our best time for family prayer
is at dinnertime.
Instead of just saying a blessing on the food,
we kneel for family prayer.
Because our morning schedules are so different,
I say prayer with each child before they leave for school.
Find what works for you, BUT most importantly...
MAKE IT A PRIORITY!
...FASTING...
This is a hard one for my family.
We are all hypoglycemic and fasting is very difficult.
We have found that fasting with a purpose
and saying prayers along the way makes our fast
no matter how long we can go,
much more meaningful.
...FAITH...
Faith is an action!!!
"... faith is things which are hoped for and not seen;
wherefore, dispute not because ye see not,
for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith."
Ether 12:6
We demonstrate faith by:
Saying Prayers, Fasting, Holding
Regular Family Home Evening, Attending the Temple, and
Following the Example of Jesus Christ.
Things may not always be perfect,
they very seldom are . . . but when we are
CONSISTENT and make these principles
a part of our DAILY ROUTINES,
ETERNAL HABITS will be developed!
...LEARNING...
DAILY SCRIPTURE STUDY
and
EDUCATION
are very important for our growth and development.
If we make studying the scriptures a daily practice,
line upon line, precept upon precept, we will learn the things
that will help us to return home to live with our Heavenly Father.
We must never stop learning!
Study and Read GOOD BOOKS that will lift and inspire us.
Check to make sure that the books you are reading
fit with the Lord's standards.
...GLORY...
Is Christ the Center of Our Homes?
If someone were to come into your home
could they find Him there?
Are we letting unclean things enter our Homes.
Our home can offer safety from the storms of life.
It is our responsibility to make sure
that our homes are protected from sin as much as possible.
Set internet filters, limit TV viewing, and be very careful
about the shows we allow in our homes.
We need to be thoughtful and kind to each other.
If you haven't already dedicated your home,
NOW might be a good time!
...ORDER...
Finances are a big part of order.
Wants vs. Needs
Does your family know the difference?
(This is something we are constantly working on in my family!)
Christmas is coming and so is the burden of debt
for many!
It doesn't have to be this way.
Christmas is supposed to be Centered on Christ.
Maybe that could be the main focus in our families this year.
Challenge family members to be careful in filling out their
Christmas List this year.
Focus on gifts of the heart rather than gifts
that have no real value.
See what happens when we take the focus from ourselves
and instead focus on others.
...A HOUSE OF GOD...
Together all of these things will create a
House of God!
Closing Prayer:
Time for TREATS:
I know I've shared this recipe with you before,
but it also works as an OBJECT LESSON for this topic.
7 Layer Bars!
Here's the Recipe:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup of butter melted
1 cup of finely crushed graham cracker crumbs
2 cups of Nestle's Chocolate Chips
(1 - 12 ounce bag)
2 cups of Nestle's Butterscotch Chips
(1 - 12 ounce bag)
1 cup of shredded sweetened coconut
1 small can of sweetened condensed milk
1 cup of chopped walnuts
To make less of a mess, I use a 9 X 13 inch glass baking dish.
Instructions:
Melt butter.
I put the glass pan in the microwave and set it for 1 minute on high.
If using a different pan, place melted butter in your baking pan.
Sprinkle the graham cracker crumbs over the melted butter,
using the back of a fork, distribute the crumbs evenly leaving a crumb base.
If there are wet spots in the base,
add additional graham cracker crumbs.
Next, sprinkle evenly in order,
chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and coconut.
Drizzle condensed milk evenly over the chips and coconut.
Sprinkle with walnuts.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes
or until the edges begin to brown and the top is slightly golden.
Cool completely, then cut into small bars,
1 inch x 2 inch.
This doesn't make a lot of bars,
so when they are smaller you get more.
Each of the ingredients in this recipe are needed
to make a SWEET COOKIE, just as each of the 7 areas
in the scripture are needed to enjoy the
SWEET BLESSINGS
of a
HOME CENTERED ON CHRIST.

Primary Theme and Scripture FHE: Service!

November's Theme is:
When We Serve Others . . . We Serve God.
Here's the Scripture:
This scripture is found in Mosiah 2:17
Opening Prayer:
Christmas is just around the corner and a time when service
opportunities are abundant.
Come up with some ideas for SERVICE
you can do as a family during the upcoming holiday season.
My family decided that we would not be exchanging
family gifts this year for Christmas.
Instead, the money we would have spent on each other
will go into a fund which will be used to help
a family in need for Christmas.
We wanted to give everyone in the family to participate
so here's how we set it up:
The mom's and dad's will do the shopping.
The younger children will help with the wrapping,
and the teens will be in charge of the SECRET DELIVERY.
I know first hand what it feels like to have a secret delivery
on Christmas Eve.
My husband and I were married shortly before Christmas.
I was the the third daughter in 10 months.
(Bless my parent's hearts!)
Needless to say, there was no money left for Christmas.
Someone very kind left packages on the doorstep of
my parents home so that my younger siblings could have Christmas.
We have never been able to find out who did it,
but we were FOREVER TOUCHED by their kindness.
By teaching our children what it feels like to GIVE,
WE ARE SERVING!
Here are a few ideas you might like to try:
Money Gloves
Our Bishop and his family gave gloves to the homeless with
rolled up dollar bills in the fingers of the glove.
Increase Your Fast Offerings
Set a goal as a family to double or triple your fast offerings
next month.  I imagine the Lord will be able to do more good
with our money than we can.
Fill Christmas Jars
Fill jars with as much money as you can and drop it off
at the doorstep of a family in need.
SECRETLY . . . OF COURSE!
Put Together Hygiene Kits
There is a great need for these items.
Check with the Welfare Systems of the church to see what you can do.
Another Neighbor Holds a Coat Drive
The coats are donated to a local shelter and are
greatly appreciated by those who receive them.
Donate Food or Turkey's
Deliver Dinner Baskets to families in need.
Put all of the ingredients for a Thanksgiving or Christmas Dinner
and deliver it a day or two before the holiday.
Bear your testimony and challenge your family
to do a little bit more than what they think they can
to give service.
Closing Prayer:
I would love to hear
YOUR ideas for service.
How great is it that when we serve others . . . we really
are serving our Heavenly Father!
Thank You for being so patient with me on the PDF files and
the VERY LATE Family Home Evening Lesson.
I caught something that put me right down!
Hoping to feel better in the morning!

Preserve It . . . Canning Corner - Syrup!

This is a new one for me...
Bottled MAPLE Syrup!
I've canned plum and choke cherry syrup,
but I've never canned Maple Syrup before now.
Many pancake syrups can be home-canned.
I was so excited to find out that
I can bottle my own Maple Syrup.
I usually avoid canning anything with dairy products
included in the recipe...still too many questions on the safety
of that, but fruit and maple....they'll work perfectly!
The best part...
It costs about .25 cents per jar to make!
AWWWW-SOME!
Here's the 1st Recipe:
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Water
2 Tbsp. Karo Syrup
(This will keep the syrup from turning grainy over time.)
1 tsp. Maple Flavoring
Syrup Instructions:
Bring the sugar and water to a boil.
Add maple flavoring and stir.
Syrup will be poured into the jars at the boiling point!
Here's the 2nd Recipe:
(This recipe makes a little thicker syrup.)
2 cups Sugar
1 cup Water
2 Tbsp. Karo Syrup
1/2 tsp. Maple Flavoring
Syrup Instructions:
Bring the sugar and water to a boil.
Add maple flavoring and stir.
Here's the 3rd Recipe:
(It's got a touch of CINNAMON!)
1 cup White Sugar
1 cup Soft Light Brown Sugar, Packed
1 cup Corn Syrup
1 cup Water
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 Cinnamon Stick, (broken in half)
Syrup Instructions:
Put all the ingredients into a large saucepan.
Bring to a boil and then simmer gently for 3 minutes.
Remove from the heat and CAREFULLY remove
the cinnamon stick and pour into clean sterilized jars.
Follow canning directions from here!
Canning Instructions:
If you are going to can pancake syrup,
you will need to bring the syrup to a boiling point
and then pour into clean sterilized jars
leaving about a 1/2-inch head space.
Wipe the rims of the jars to make sure that
they are clean and ready for the new, hot lids.
Simmer lids before putting them on the bottles of hot syrup.
Caution:
When you are working with hot liquids...be very careful!
I usually keep oven mits handy when I'm canning.
Place filled jars into a boiling waterbath canner.
Process PINTS for 7 minutes.
Start timing when the water returns to a boil.
Remove jars from canner and cool on a wire rack.
Here's the PDF:
Note:
The recipes listed above are for a regular batch of syrup.
For canning . . . Make sure you 3,4,or 7 times the recipe!
Now you're ready for some of these...
FLUFFY PANCAKES!
Woot...Woot!
Lots to post today!
I will be posting AFTER I go can
some TURKEY CHUNKS
at the Cannery!
I will also be adding the PDF to this post and the
pictures and PDF to the Gobble post.

Family Home Evening - Standing with Courage on the Lord's Side!

Today's FHE Lesson was supposed to be a
Family History Family Home Evening
but . . .
Yesterday during our Teachings for Our Times
Relief Society Lesson
we were shown this picture of Samuel the Lamanite.
As my sister Amber pointed out,
this picture opens the door for a Perfect Object Lesson.
(This artwork is available at Real Hero Poster Link or Seagull Book and Tape.)
They have featured both men and women in the scriptures.
They truly are
REAL HEROES
for our children to pattern their lives after.
Opening Prayer:
Scripture:
"Have I not commanded the?
Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid,
neither be thou dismayed:
for the Lord thy God is with thee
withersoever thou goest."
Joshua 1:9
Song:
"Dare to Do Right"
Children's Songbook Page 158
Story:
(Tell the Story of Samuel the Lamanite.)
1 And now, it came to pass that there were many
who heard the words of Samuel, the Lamanite,
which he spake upon the walls of the city...
2 But as many as there were who did not believe
in the words of Samuel were angry with him;
and they cast stones at him upon the wall,
and also many shot arrows at him
as he stood upon the wall;
but the Spirit of the Lord was with him,
insomuch that they could not hit him
with their stones neither with their arrows.
3 Now when they saw that they could not hit him,
there were many more who did believe on his words,
insomuch that they went away unto Nephi to be baptized.
Object Lesson:
Put the picture of Samuel the Lamanite up on the wall.
Print and cut out the arrows.
I made some arrows with some ideas for you to use
as well as some blank ones that you can fill in on your own.
Now ask your family the question below:
"What are some of the temptations Satan is throwing at us today?"
Take turns having your children stand by the wall next to the picture
of Samuel the Lamanite.
As family members give their answers,
have them put the arrows up on the wall next to the child.
(They will be standing as if they were Samuel.)
Ask family members:
"What can we do to make sure that we don't get hit by the temptations of our day?"
"What can we do to have the Spirit of the Lord with us?"
Remind your family that when we
put our Faith in the Lord
and show courage,
WE CAN STAND AS SAMUEL DID
AND NOT BE HIT!
Closing Prayer:
Don't Forget to take pictures of your children
standing against the wall with the arrows.
This will serve as a reminder for them to be strong,
to have faith, and courage to stand up for what is right!
Here's the PDF:
Here's the TREAT/GAME:
Spider's on a String
 Halloween-Style Donut Eating Contest!
Tie the donuts to a string and have family members
try to eat the entire donut without using their hands!
(I put a plastic tablecloth under the donuts to make the clean up go FASTER!)
You Will Need:
Chocolate Covered Donuts
(You can use large or small ones.)
Pretzel Sticks
Butcher's Twine
M&M's
and
Milk Chocolate Chips
To Make Your Donut Spiders:
Stick the pretzels into the sides of the donut.
Dip the M&M's into melted chocolate chips and add them
to the donuts to make the spider's eyes.
I used some mini chips for the eyeball centers.
Stick eyeball centers on with the melted chocolate as well.
Put a string through the center and tie it to a main line,
and you're ready to play.
Remember:
NO HANDS!
Have a GREAT NIGHT!

The Topic of Today's FHE Lesson Is:
Following the Prophet!
It is based on a talk that was was quoted twice during
the last general conference.
It was also taught in our Relief Society Meeting yesterday.
(Which was a very powerful lesson.)
It is VERY IMPORTANT for our children to know
that the Prophet WILL NOT EVER lead us astray.
The Lord will not allow it!
Here's a Link to the Talk:
Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet Link
This talk was given in 1981 by President Ezra Taft Benson.
Please read and review each of the 14 Fundamentals with your family
for tonight's Family Home Evening.
First: The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
President Thomas S. Monson
Second: The living prophet is more vital to us than the Standard Works.
Third: The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
Fourth: The prophet will never lead the Church astray.
President Wilford Woodruff stated:
“I say to Israel,
the Lord will never permit me or any other man
who stands as president of the Church to lead you astray.
It is not in the program.
It is not in the mind of God.”
(The Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, pp. 212–13.)
Fifth: The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or diplomas to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
Sixth: The prophet does not have to say “Thus saith the Lord” to give us scripture.
Seventh: The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
Eighth: The Prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
Ninth: The prophet can receive revelation on any matter—temporal or spiritual.
Tenth: The prophet may well advise on civic matters.
Eleventh: The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
Twelfth: The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
Thirteenth: The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—The highest quorum in the Church.
Fourteenth: The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.
President Benson closed his talk with this testimony:
"In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these
“Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”,
for our salvation depends on them.
I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true.
If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord
then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with
His Mortal Captain.
How close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s Anointed
The Living Prophet
President of the Church,
and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.
May God bless us all to look to the Prophet and the Presidency
in the critical and crucial days ahead is my prayer."
Challenge:
Hang the 14 Fundamentals in Following the Prophet
on your fridge or on a wall for your family to see
throughout the week.
